His two sisters, Nellie and Winifred, had taken courses in typing and stenography. Both had found employment in Halifax. With the girls staying at home and paying board, his mother was able to keep up her monthly payments on the house without his help. All the same, she must have felt some concern when her son announced he was going to give up his secure job as a telegrapher. But Tom believed in Karma — fate by deeds. He resigned from the Marconi service in mid-June. After a long bicycle trip through the pretty apple orchards and meadows of the Annapolis Valley, he stayed with his mother and sisters on Duncan Street and took a course in typing and bookkeeping at the Maritime Business College.

It was another isolated place. The outlook was depressing. He promised himself he would endure it for one year — the same length of time he had served on Sable Island — and not one day more. In fact he was to stay near the Mersey for the rest of his life. It was not for love of his work as a clerk at the MacLeod Company at Milton, a village at the edge of the forest, about one hundred sixty kilometres west of Halifax, that he remained. Initially it was because he fell in love with the Nova Scotia wilderness.

It was a proud moment when he donned his officer’s uniform resplendent with a double row of brass buttons down the front and gold braid on the cuffs. However, it didn’t take him long to discover that wireless operators had little prestige. He wrote later “…a brasspounder was considered, and frequently told, that he was the lowest form of marine life. ” He was also the lowest paid. 00 a month. All the same at fifteen he had a man’s job, and he was determined to succeed. ” This was exactly his own philosophy.
